Jamini Roy & his creation_Susmita Adhikari |
Jamini Roy was a prominent Indian painter who lived
from 1887 to 1972. He was born in Beliatore village of Bankura district, West
Bengal, India. He is known for his unique style of combining traditional Indian
folk art with modernism.
Roy began his career as a portrait painter but later
turned towards the use of traditional Indian styles and techniques. He was
greatly inspired by the Kalighat painting style, which originated in the 19th
century in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). He also took inspiration from the
Bengali folk art forms of the patachitra and the alpana.
Roy's paintings often depicted ordinary village life
and people, as well as mythological and religious subjects. He used bold lines,
bright colors, and flat, decorative forms to create a distinctive style that
was both modern and traditional. His work was influential in the development of
modern Indian art, and he remains one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th
century in India.
